“`The Annual Gala began in 1972, with Charlie Chaplin returning from exile to accept the commendation. Since then, the award has been re-named for Chaplin. Many film industry’s most notable talents have been honored, such as Bette Davis, James Stewart, Laurence Olivier, Billy Wilder, Diane Keaton, Federico Fellini, Robert Altman, Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese, Tom Hanks, Alfred Hitchcock, Barbra Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, Sidney Poitier, Michael Douglas, Catherine Deneuve, and last year, Morgan Freeman.  The Lincoln Center’s most important fundraising event, this supports the organization’s work to enhance the awareness, accessibility, and understanding of the art of cinema. The upcoming gala is May 8th at the David H. Koch Theater.

“`The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting art, and elevating the craft of cinema. The Lincoln Center shines a spotlight on the everlasting, yet, evolving importance of the moving image. This nonprofit organization was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international film.
